The course repertoire is selected from standard orchestral works from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

Each day begins with a technique class followed by workshops in which every student receives brief individual lessons on the set repertoire, assisted by two pianists playing from score reductions.

During the afternoons of the third and sixth sessions of each term, a group of professional string players joins the class with the piano duo, giving the student valuable experience with an ensemble.  A digital camera is available at all sessions.

Students should provide their own full scores and batons.

Sessions are held fortnightly at the Conservatoire on Fridays during term-time.  The day lasts for just over six hours, from 11.00 am to 5.15 pm, with suitable breaks for lunch and refreshments.  Hot drinks at breaks come free of charge, although lunch is not provided.

The course is designed to run for a year, but although students are expected to give a year-long commitment, under exceptional circumstances it may be possible to join it during the year.

Places are limited to eight students.
